Retail Union Prez Named to New York Governor-elect's Transition Team
NEW YORK -- New York Gov.-elect Eliot Spitzer has tapped Stuart Appelbaum, president of the 100,000-member Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) here, for the Policy Advisory Committee for Labor and Workforce Development, one of 13 groups created to help guide the incoming governor's transition efforts.
RWDSU members include employees of A&P, Waldbaum's, Food Emporium, and Stop & Shop, as well as Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Duane Reade, Syms, and Modell's.
"It's a breath of fresh air to finally have a governor who understands how vital organized labor is to rebuilding New York's middle-class," said Appelbaum, whose union worked closely with Spitzer in a drive to combat worker abuse in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick.
The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union/UFCW represents workers throughout the United States and Canada, including about 45,000 workers in New York state.
