Retail Food Drives Planet Organic's 50% Growth in Q2

EDMONTON, Canada -- The supermarket division of Canadian retailer Planet Organic Health Corp. was the main force behind the company's 50 percent jump in fiscal Q2 sales, which reached $13.8 million, Planet Organic said yesterday.

"Each of our divisions performed well," said company co-founder and c.f.o. Darren Krissie. "Planet Organic Markets showed the greatest growth." The retailer's seven full-service organic food stores generated revenues of $9.2 million, and saw a 17.9 percent same-store sales increase for the quarter, which ended December 31, 2006.

During the quarter, Planet Organic opened its second Calgary unit and bought a second location in Edmonton.

"The new Calgary store exceeded my predictions, and became profitable the very week it opened," said Mark Craft, company co-founder and president of the division. "The second store in Edmonton will add about $750,000 to quarterly revenue."

Sangsters Health Centers, the franchised 50 vitamin store division of Planet Organic had fiscal quarterly sales of $4.3 million, a 9.3 percent increase over last year. Same-store sales increased 6.1 percent.

Healthy's, the retailer's corporate health centers, saw $976,934 in sales for the quarter, an 8 percent increase over last year, when it was privately owned. The operation comprises seven locations in the Greater Toronto Area.

Trophic, the vitamin manufacturing division of Planet Organic, grew its fiscal second quarter Q2 sales 7.9 percent to $1.6 million.
