Raley's to Roll Out Topco Nutrition Scores
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Raley's here said it will begin to roll out the food nutrition scoring system offered by Skokie, Ill.-based Topco Associates, LLC, and expects to fully implement the program in its 124 stores by the end of the year.
A spokeswoman for the privately held upscale grocer told the Central Valley Business Times that its shoppers will soon be able to spot the nutrition ratings of various foods posted on Raley's supermarket shelves. The spokeswoman said Raley's anticipates the scoring program will be up and running in all the chain's units by the end of 2008, according to the report.
The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center created the system, called the Overall Nutritional Quality Index (ONQI), after two years of research and development. The program enables at-a-glance food comparisons on the basis of overall nutritional quality, using a scale of 1 to 100, with healthier foods getting higher scores.
Topco said the system was developed by a group of top nutrition scientists from throughout North America. The system uses a simple numeric score to rate any food item or recipe, enabling consumers to make choices based on an assessment of a food's nutritional value.
