Raleys and Organic Bistro to Serve Healthy Solutions for Diabetics
Raley's Family of Fine Stores and Organic Bistro Whole Life Meals have teamed up to provide free classes, resources, and healthy products for consumers living with diabetes.
As part of the program, West Sacramento-based Raley's corporate dietitian Earline Griffith, R.D. has started classes and Raley's store tours specific to the needs of diabetic customers.
"With so many nutritious offerings in our natural foods and fresh produce departments, we want to provide customers fighting diabetes with resources and realistic meal solutions, so that achieving a healthy lifestyle is convenient for our customers," Griffith said.
According to the retailer, diabetes affects 21 million people in the U.S., and 7 to 10 percent of the population in California alone. Given these statistics, Raley's and Organic Bistro are taking a proactive role in helping shoppers make better, more healthful lifestyle choices in and out of the grocery aisle.
In support of Raley's efforts to reach out to Northern California's diabetic population, Organic Bistro is supplying each class with literature, handouts, and coupons for its frozen entree products, which are available at select stores under Raley's banners Raley's, Bel Air Markets, and Nob Hill Foods.
Organic Bistro said a registered dietician, gourmet chef, and naturopathic physician developed the Whole Life Meals line specifically for people with a busy lifestyle. The company said the line is suitable for diabetics because it was developed on the principles of low glycemic index and load, which are measures for how quickly foods turn into sugar. The meals contain only whole grains, lean proteins, and at least three ounces of vegetables; and are low in sodium.
Raley's operates 129 stores in Northern California and Nevada under four banners: Raley's Supermarkets, Bel Air Markets, Nob Hill Foods, and Food Source.
