Publix Taps S.V.P./C.I.O.

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets, Inc. here has tapped Laurie Zeitlin, an s.v.p. and chief information officer at FedEx Kinko’s, to serve in the same role at the regional chain. Zeitlin, who is slated to begin her new position Jan. 30, will become the highest-ranking female executive at Publix.

Zeitlin will replace Danny Risener, who is retiring after 43 years with Publix, Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous told Progressive Grocer. “Laurie will handle budgets, software and hardware, and all other areas that encompass IT,” said Brous.

Zeitlin was formerly v.p. of information and e-business technology for The Home Depot.

In other Publix news, the retailer recently closed a Nashville-area store that "wasn't meeting the company’s sales expectations," according to Brous.

Publix, which operates 875 stores throughout the Southeast, entered the Nashville area in 2002 via an acquisition of seven former Albertsons grocery stores. It now has 11 locations in greater Nashville and continues to look for new sites, said Brous. The company plans to open three stores in the area this year, she added.
