Publix Said to Close Store in Ethnic Atlanta Neighborhood
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets, which has introduced a Hispanic-centric concept in its home state, is closing a conventional Publix store in an ethnically diverse area of Atlanta because of declining sales, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported.
The store, located in the Jimmy Carter Boulevard area of Norcross, an Atlanta suburb, will close its doors on Sept. 9, a Publix spokeswoman told the newspaper. She said the company is closing the store because of declining sales.
The neighborhood had experienced a surge in Hispanic residents, and Publix had followed suit by stocking Hispanic pastries, offering thin sliced meats, and carrying products from Hispanic countries.
But the Hispanic population seemed to be favoring Latino mom-and-pop stores, according to the report.
