Publix Opens Two 'Pix' C-store Formats in Florida
LAKELAND, Fla. - Publix Super Markets has opened two new convenience stores, branded as "Pix," in Florida, The Lakeland Ledger reports. So far, the stores seem to be catching on with the public, but the overall launch of Pix is behind schedule, according to the Ledger.
The two stores, located in Lakeland and Winter Haven, are the first of the company?s initial four Pix stores. Both locations have 1,200-square-foot, "kiosk"-style buildings flanked by gas pumps on each side.
Publix is expected to open another Pix store in Kissimmee March 19. The original projection date was in January. Another store that was slated to open in January in Deltona is now scheduled for April 30, Publix spokesman Lee Brunson said. These stores will be larger than the Polk stores, at about 4,000 square feet. Brunson speculated that environmental issues involved in putting gas tanks in the ground may be tying up the process.
Publix has said it would test the Pix concept for six months to a year before deciding whether to expand it.
The company is featuring a special loyalty program tying sales at its supermarkets to gas prices at Pix stores.
