Publix Fills Millionth Free Prescription, Adds Drug to Program

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here has filled its 1 millionth free antibiotic prescription and has added doxycycline hyclate capsules to its free prescription drug program.

Rolled out in August 2007, the program also features the oral antibiotics amoxicillin, cephalexin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP), ciprofloxacin (excluding ciprofloxacin XR), penicillin VK, ampicillin, and erythromycin (excluding Ery-Tab) at all of the retailer's pharmacy departments.

"Our customers and the medical community have been very pleased with the program," said Publix media and community relations director Maria Brous in a statement. "Adding doxycycline hyclate capsules to the program will help meet the health-and-wellness needs of even more of our customers and associates."

New or current customers can provide their Publix pharmacist with their prescription, up to a 14-day supply, and it will be filled at no charge. The number of prescriptions customers may fill free is unlimited.

The free antibiotics are offered to customers regardless of their prescription insurance provider.

Privately owned and operated by its 146,000 employees, Publix has 926 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee.
