Publix Deploys CA'S Unicenter to Centrally Manage Diverse Business Environment

Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) on Wednesday announced that Publix Super Markets is deploying Unicenter to centrally monitor its IT infrastructure, speed problem resolution and increase system performance across its distributed retail computing environments.

CA's Unicenter management tools will replace numerous point solutions previously utilized at Publix, reducing management complexity and easing the training burden on the company's IT support staff. The ability of Unicenter to integrate and automate job scheduling, problem correlation, and backup across diverse platforms and operating systems was key to its selection by Publix.

"Our IT infrastructure enables business systems that help our retail associates meet the needs of our customers," said Terry Brigman, director of I/S Services, Publix. "Unicenter helps us better manage our IT assets from one central location, without having to retrain I/S staff when new systems are introduced."

Publix's diverse environment includes point of sale, inventory, category management, and many other business systems residing in office, warehouse, and more than 670 retail locations. These business systems and back-end databases run on a mainframe, dozens of
UNIX servers, thousands of Windows NT servers, NT workstations and point of sale devices. With such an extensive, geographically dispersed infrastructure, the task of identifying system bottlenecks had become increasingly complex and resource-intensive.

"IT efficiencies help ensure that trucks loaded with inventory leave our warehouses on time, enabling staff to keep store shelves replenished with the freshest products, creating an optimal experience for the customer," said Brigman. "Unicenter is helping Publix manage the IT infrastructure supporting these business needs.
