Produce Industry Launching Campaign Urging Kids to Eat Fruits & Veggies
WILMINGTON, Del. - The Produce for Better Health Foundation, Dole Food Co. and the Crayola brand have partnered to create an educational program designed to teach children the importance of eating a variety of fruits and vegetables. The program, called "There's a Rainbow on My Plate," will be rolled out at more than 3,000 supermarkets and 12,000 elementary schools in March during National Nutrition Month.
The effort encourages children to reach 5 A Day by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables from each of the program's five color groups: blue/purple, green, white, yellow/orange and red.
Shipper displays in the produce departments of participating retailers will offer a free "There's a Rainbow on My Plate" coloring book with the purchase of Crayola Twistables, a new type of crayon that twists up more color when the tip wears down. Participating retailers include Big Y Foods, Clemens Markets, Cub Foods, Food Lion, Giant of Maryland, Giant Food, Super G, Hannaford Brothers, Hy-Vee Food Stores, Pathmark Stores, Ralphs Grocery Co., Safeway, Wegmans, and Wal-Mart Supercenters, among others.
