Price Chopper to Repeat Gluten-free Food Festival

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Due to the rising profile of Americans with problems digesting gluten, Price Chopper here said it will hold a second installment of its well-received Gluten-Free Food Festival later this week.

The free festival will take place Jan. 7, and chain said, at the Century House in Latham, N.Y.

Like the first festival, which attracted a crowd of 300, Price Chopper is promoting the upcoming event to celiac disease support groups and gastroenterologists, as well as on in-store signage and via direct contact with shoppers who have communicated with Price Chopper through the regional retailer's Healthy U Connection hotline, Web site, and call center with queries about celiac disease and gluten-free products.

"We recognize that there are many challenges associated with managing celiac disease, and have significantly increased our offering of gluten-free foods in many of our stores in an effort to improve the shopping experience for those with celiac disease," said Price Chopper manager of consumer services and trends Maureen Murphy in a statement.

Price Chopper senior corporate nutritionist Ellie Wilson and Elizabeth Barbone, author of "Easy Gluten-Free Baking," will be offering tips and recipes at the festival.
