Price Chopper Opens First of Six Former Tops Stores

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Price Chopper will open the first of six stores recently acquired from Tops Markets on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 9:00 am in Fulton, N.Y.

The Fulton store replaces the Price Chopper in Pyramid Mall, which will close Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. All of the stores bought from Tops are in central New York.

Price Chopper director of public relations and consumer relations Mona Golub told Progressive Grocer that the stores underwent various internal and external renovations that were both "visible and invisible to the consumer." Among the so-called invisible changes was the replacement of the front end systems with registers tying into Price Chopper's corporate mainframe, the retailer's exclusive electronic checking, and Hewlett-Packard thermal printers. From the visible standpoint, the decor and color scheme were updated in each department, every shelf was reset, and perishables will be replaced by the chain's "uniquely superior product," noted Golub.

Like the Fulton store, locations in Oneida and Oswego will replace existing Price Chopper stores. According to Golub, those two stores will open a week from Sunday, Oct. 30.

Opening dates and plans have not yet been determined for locations in Owego, Sidney, and Tupper Lake.

Price Chopper president and c.e.o. Neil M. Golub, Mayor Daryl Hayden, and other city officials will attend the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Fulton unit.

The family-owned Golub Corp. owns and operates 110 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Golub's approximately 22,000 associates collectively own 55 percent of the company's privately held stock.
