Piggly Wiggly First to Be Certified as ‘Green Grocer’ in Wis.

Piggly Wiggly Midwest’s store in Cambridge, Wis., has achieved Green Grocer certification from the Madison-based Wisconsin Grocers Association (WGA), which is spearheading a pilot program to help grocery stores achieve energy savings, sustainability and environmental standards.

According to the WGA, the Sheboygan, Wis.-based grocer’s Cambridge store will reduce 832,266 pounds of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions next year as a result of upgraded refrigerators with a digital monitoring system. The store will in turn annually save $50,844, 433,853 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 10,246 therms of natural gas. That’s enough energy to power 47 homes and the equivalent of taking 70 cars off the road.

A ceremony commemorating the achievement took place Thursday afternoon.
