Pharmacists' Strike Averted at Pathmark
NEW YORK - Pathmark narrowly avoided a walkout by some 800 pharmacists and technicians with a last-minute contract agreement, reported the New York Times. The pact, reached at 4:30 a.m. Monday after an all-night bargaining session, includes a 17.5 percent pay increase for pharmacists over the contract's four-year term, and a 16.5 percent increase for technicians, interns and other workers, said Mike Rifkin, a spokesman for the union representing the workers.
Pharmacy workers at 47 Pathmark stores in New York City and four suburban counties had been without a contract since October, and had said they were paid less than their counterparts at other large chains. They included workers at all Pathmark stores with pharmacies in Westchester, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Rifkin said the contract also includes a guarantee of no layoffs.
