PG’s 90th Anniversary Site Earns Folio Gold Award

Progressive Grocer has earned a Gold Eddie prize for its 90th anniversary website in Folio’s 2012 Eddie and Ozzie Awards competition, which recognizes overall excellence in magazine publishing design and editorial.

PG’s 90th anniversary microsite placed first in the “Custom Website, frequency 6 or more times a year,” category for outstanding editorial content.

The Folio awards competition spans print and digital, with the Eddies honoring the best in editorial and the Ozzies the best in design. As the largest of its kind for magazine publishers, Folio’s Eddie and Ozzie awards program is the only publishing industry competition open to magazines and websites of all kinds, including consumer, B-to-B, association, custom and regional.

"We are honored to be recognized with a Gold Eddie award, which recognizes the publishing industry's most insightful and creative online products," said Meg Major, PG’s editorial director. “Our 90th anniversary website was created as a natural extension of our overall mission to serve readers with authoritative, comprehensive editorial content, presented in a compelling, easy-to-use format. This award is a testament to our editorial, e-media and creative teams’ dedication and commitment to that mission."

PG’s online microsite, which has been regularly updated throughout the year through the present, presents a visual and interactive glimpse into the archives of the supermarket industry’s leading trade publication, along with a retrospective of the evolution of the food retailing and CPG industries since the publication's genesis in 1922.

To showcase the progressive path of the retail food industry, the microsite features an interactive timeline, which begins in 1920 and details important milestones and innovations, along with contextual notes on the major economic, industrial and societal impacts of those decades.

The effect of mass communication – and its evolution – can be viewed on the site’s multimedia section, while visitors can also peruse insightful photos, vintage radio ads and nostalgic TV commercials that provide a first-hand time capsule of how supermarkets and CPG companies promoted their brands in the early days of print, radio and television advertising.

Also showcased on the new site is a gallery of industry innovators, whose visions laid the foundation for today’s dynamic grocery industry.

The “Industry Evolution” section further provides an in-depth view of the grocery industry’s development in the areas of store design, marketing and merchandising, and commercials, ads and promotions, along with decade-specific overviews of major events, including links to illustrative photos and videos.
