Penn Traffic Closing McConnellsburg, Pa. Store by End of Month

A 28,000-square-foot BiLo Foods store in McConnellsburg, Pa. will close on Saturday, April 26, 2008, chain Penn Traffic Co. said this week. The store opened in 1990.

The Syracuse, N.Y.-based grocer cited the store's performance as a reason for the closure. According to Penn Traffic president and c.e.o. Greg Young in a statement, "Closing this underperforming store is a necessary but difficult decision that will benefit the health and well-being of the company as a whole, while allowing us to further invest in our customer experience."

Young also noted that the business had "a responsibility to our associates, customers and shareholders to continually monitor and assess each and every component of our business."

Company spokeswoman Meredith Dropkin told Progressive Grocer that the McConnellsburg store was the only Penn Traffic location currently closing.

According to the Fulton County News in Pennsylvania, for 15 years, BiLo was the only supermarket in the county, until May 2005, when Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa. opened a location south of McConnellsburg.

Almost 40 employees are affected by the closure, the paper reported.
