Pathmark Set for Dozen In-store Health Clinics

CARTERET, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores, Inc. here said today that it has reached a license agreement with Chester, N.J.-based MiniMedCare, PA to open an in-store clinic in Weehawken next month. A second unit in a Jersey City store is scheduled to roll out later this year, with 10 more to follow in as-yet-undisclosed locations in Pathmark's marketing area.

Qualified nurse practitioners and physician assistants will staff the clinics.

"Our selection of MiniMedCare is a reflection of the confidence we have in the physicians who run the program and the system they have in place that ensures people will receive proper care for common afflictions," noted Pathmark co-president and chief merchandising officer, Ken Martindale.

Like many other entries into the burgeoning walk-in clinic business, MiniMedCare clinics are designed to treat patients for common ailments such as strep throat, bladder infections, and rashes, with no appointments necessary.

To ensure patients receive proper medical treatment, MiniMedCare facilities employ the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, said the clinic provider. During a patient visit, a brief medical history is entered, in addition to the recommended treatment and prescriptions. The system provides a series of physician-developed protocols that are followed to determine the appropriate treatment. A medical doctor daily reviews all patients' records to make sure proper procedure is followed. If a patient's symptoms indicate a more serious condition or illness, he or she will be referred to a primary care physician.

"With over 20 years of experience in operating our own urgent care centers, we see MiniMedCare as an extension of our practices, only now in a retail setting at Pathmark," said Dr. Roger DiRuggerio, a partner with MiniMedCare, with Dr. Larry Earl.

Pathmark operates 141 stores in the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia Metropolitan areas.
