Pathmark Opening Prototype in Philadelphia

CARTERET, N.J. -- Just in time for the long Labor Day weekend, Pathmark will open a 55,500-square-foot prototype store in an ethnically diverse part of Philadelphia, featuring what the company says are many new merchandising concepts.

The prototype's grand opening will be Sept. 2. The store will replace the grocer's current unit, which opened in 1978 and is located two blocks north of the new site.

"The wide selection and diverse offerings will delight our customers who faithfully supported the former Pathmark, and attract new shoppers, as well," said Pathmark's new c.e.o. John Standley in a statement.

Among the new merchandising concepts manifest in the prototype: the deli department will feature an expanded line of hot prepared foods, in addition to self-service rib, wing, and Chinese food bars; a seating area near the deli; and a service butcher.

The produce department will carry 100 more fruits and vegetables than the average supermarket offers, while the service bakery will provide custom cake decorating and cake imaging, and the floral department will merchandise a broad assortment of cut flowers and potted plants.

Among the prototype's new nonfood features are a reading center with hardcover and paperback books; a Corporate Express section featuring business, school, and home office supplies; a toy department; and 'Dollar Day' items. The pharmacy, which will accept almost all major prescriptions plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, will have a private area for patient consultation, along with a line of durable medical goods.

Customers will be able to pay utility or phone bills, send items by Western Union, play the lottery, and buy gift cards to many retailers at the store's Customer Service Center, Pathmark said. Sixteen high-tech scanning registers will allow shoppers the option of self-checkout, or packing their own groceries.

The store will be open seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Pathmark Stores, Inc. operates 142 supermarkets in the New York-New Jersey and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
