Pathmark, HSBC to Introduce Loyalty Rewards Payment Card Program

CARTERET, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores, Inc. here and Prospect Heights, Ill.-based HSBC Finance Corp.'s card and retail services business have joined forces to offer a multipurpose rewards and payment card for supermarket customers.

The new Pathmark Advantage Payment Card will improve on the current Pathmark Advantage Club card by offering a better one-swipe payment process that also yields loyalty rewards, the chain said.

Described by the companies as the first program of its kind for a major U.S. supermarket chain, the Pathmark Advantage Payment Card links a customer's Advantage Club card to his or her existing bank checking account, giving customers an easy way to earn rewards and pay for purchases with PIN debit on one Pathmark-branded card.

The new card also provides Pathmark with a cost-effective way to reward its loyal shoppers without making any changes at the point of sale or sacrificing any customer service efficiencies.

A pilot is scheduled for later this year at a select number of New York Pathmark stores.

"We believe that the Pathmark Advantage Payment Card will provide greater efficiencies for our customers," said Pathmark e.v.p. of business strategy and marketing John Derderian in a statement. "Using this cutting-edge technology will afford the consumer the added convenience of paying for their purchases with their loyalty card and simplify the transaction process. We anticipate a successful test launch and eventually rolling out the program throughout the entire chain."

HSBC card and retail services issues merchant-branded payment cards for retailers and manufacturers, and is one of the largest issuers of credit cards in the United States. The new Pathmark-branded card is offered under HSBC's OptiPay loyalty rewards PIN-payment program, employing the Tempo Payment Platform and the Tempo Payment Network.

As well as making in-store payments and receiving rewards, Pathmark customers will be able to use the new card at over 200,000 U.S. retail locations that participate in the Tempo Payment Network.

Pathmark operates 141 supermarkets in the New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
