Pathmark and Smithfield Testing Subway Brand Deli Meats and Cheeses

CARTERET, N.J. - Pathmark has rolled out a new line of Subway-branded premium deli meats and cheeses in all 141 of its stores in the initial stroke of a one-year test of the line on the part of Smithfield Foods.

Pathmark's introductory ad for the Subway product line breaks this Friday, Pathmark spokesman Rich Savner told Progressive Grocer.

The Subway-branded line is being made by Smithfield Deli Group, a division of Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield Foods. Smithfield said it plans to expand the test to other U.S. grocers and mass retailers during the first half of 2007.

The deli meats and cheeses, including such varieties as Bologna, Virginia Ham, Genoa Salami, Pepperoni, Oven Roasted Turkey, Roast Beef, Swiss Cheese, Provolone Cheese, and White American Cheese, will be available at Pathmark's full-service deli counters.

"Smithfield Deli Group is committed to producing the same high-quality, delicious, fresh, and healthy products as are offered at Subway restaurants nationwide," said Richard Goodman, s.v.p. of Smithfield Deli Group, in a statement.

Milford, Conn.-based Subway is the world's largest submarine sandwich franchise and second-largest fast-food chain, with over 26,800 locations in 86 countries.
