Pa. Gives Kennie's Market $750K to Expand Gettysburg Store
GETTYSBURG, Pa., -- A supermarket in this historic town here will receive about $750,000 from Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development to help fund its expansion.
The Associated Wholesalers Inc.-supplied Kennie's Market, owned and operated by veteran grocer P.K. Hoover, will receive a $500,000 Housing and Redevelopment Assistance package - part loan, part grant - and a $250,000 grant through the state's Fresh Food Financing Initiative to help with the demolition of its store and the construction of a larger store.
The state money will also support related public improvement projects, such as alley improvements and curb changes. The project is expected to create 90 jobs.
"Improving access to food retailers is a key strategy that helps attract new residents to our urban areas and established communities," said Dennis Yablonsky, Pa.'s department of community and economic development (DCED) secretary. "The scarcity of grocery stores in downtown areas can create a real hardship for residents. As the only market in Gettysburg's central business district, this project will help to ensure that downtown residents will have convenient access to nutritious foods."
The project includes the demolition of an existing 18,000-square-foot grocery store and the construction of a new, 33,000-square-foot market, as well as parking to accommodate 75 customers and 24 employees, new landscaping, and sidewalks.
