Oldways Debuts Redesigned Med Diet Pyramid

Based on a high-level international meeting of leading nutrition scientists convened last November by Oldways to review the large number of recent studies expanding support for the healthful Mediterranean Diet, the Boston-based nonprofit educational organization has now introduced a revised version of its Mediterranean Diet Pyramid.

Among the new features:

-- All plant foods have been combined into one group. This change conveys the importance of eating a food or foods from this plant-based group -- fruits, vegetables, grains (mostly whole), beans, seeds, nuts, olive oil, herbs and a new addition -- at every meal to achieve maximum health benefits.

-- The pyramid now recommends eating fish at least twice a week.

-- The illustration has been updated to celebrate the delicious, varied foods of the Mediterranean region, as well as to engage and excite consumers.
