Obituary: Garnet Marsh, Marsh Supermarkets Matriarch

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Garnet Rosetta Gibson Marsh, the widow of Ermal W. Marsh, founder of Marsh Supermarkets, has died. She was 96.

A graduate of Eaton High School and Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University), where she met her husband, Mrs. Marsh served on the board of Marsh Supermarkets and the Salvation Army.

Active in her community, she was president of the Beta Theta Chapter of Psi Iota Xi and served as a member of the Y.M.C.A. board. She was Deaconess and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Patroness of Sigma Alpha Iota National Music Fraternity, and a member of Matinee Musical, D.A.R., Monday Study Club and Delaware Country Club.

Her husband died in 1959 in a plane crash. After his death, Garnet remained involved with Marsh Supermarkets by serving on its board and by attending many new store openings. In 1966, she cut the ribbon on the very first Village Pantry opening, and in 1981, was awarded the Founder's Plaque for the 50th anniversary of Marsh Supermarkets. In 1996, Marsh Supermarkets named the foodservice area in Store 75 "Garnet's Grill" in her honor.

Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2007. Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 1400 W.
