NRF: Average Man Plans to Spend $125 This Valentine's Day
WASHINGTON - Some American men are going all out for Valentine's Day, according to the findings of a new National Retail Federation (NRF) survey. The NRF 2003 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch for NRF, found that the average man plans to spend $125.96 on Valentine's Day. Women, on the other hand, plan to spend $38.22.
More than 80 percent of Americans will give their spouse or significant other a greeting card on Valentine's Day. Also, more than half of couples will celebrate with an evening out (58.7 percent). In other gift categories, 65.3 percent of men plan to send flowers, 32.2 percent will be giving candy, and 21.1 percent are buying jewelry.
"It seems very clear to us this year that most men plan to celebrate Valentine's Day in very traditional ways," said NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin. "The average man is planning on a big celebration-sending flowers, giving a card and taking his wife or significant other on an evening out."
The study also found that young adults show the most enthusiasm for Valentine's Day, with the average 18-34-year-old planning to spend almost $140 on the holiday. Americans 35-54 plan to spend almost $60 ($58.65) while consumers 55+ plan to spend less than $50 ($46.67).
The poll of 1,697 consumers was conducted from January 28-30. The consumer poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.0 percent.
