Northern California Clerks and Meatcutter Union Reaches Agreement with Area Retailers

United Food and Commercial Workers 588-Northern California today announced that it had reached tentative Agreement on a new, three-year collective bargaining agreement for its over 7,000 members who work in area Raley's, Bel Air and Nob Hill Foods supermarkets.

The new contract features wage increases in each year, an unprecedented large pension increase for those who retire, and maintenance of health benefits which are considered the finest, most comprehensive available to working people in the nation.

Members will be receiving a detailed explanation of the agreement in the mail this week.

"Continuing our proud and historic tradition of unsurpassed collective bargaining agreements, the union has again won a landmark contract that will again set the standard for other UFCW unions nationwide," said Jack L. Loveall, President of the Northern California union and Senior Vice President of the UFCW International.

"In addition to substantially increasing the members' wages, the new agreement guarantees the present high level of health benefits, despite soaring medical costs," said Loveall.

There were many other improvements the union negotiated despite attempts by the employers to force concessions, he said.

With 28,000 members overall, UFCW 588 is the largest local union in Northern California. The UFCW International with 1.4 million members is the largest private sector union in North America.
