No Frills, Bag ‘N Save Team Up to Fight Hunger
Under the umbrella “Teaming up to Fight Hunger,” No Frills and Bag ‘N Save supermarkets donated more than 7,000 pounds of Smart Chicken to two food pantries in the Omaha metropolitan area.
This is the first joint community effort since the two grocery groups joined forces under new owner Nash Finch Co. in 2012.
Smart Chicken offered one pound of food for every 10 pounds of chicken purchased by customers at No Frills and Bag ‘N Save stores last November. “Working together, No Frills and Bag ‘N Save can have even greater impact in the community,” grocers’ spokesman Bill Loneman said. “We saw that happen with this Smart Chicken donation and it felt great.”
Representatives from No Frills, Bag ‘N Save, Smart Chicken and two food pantries helped unload a huge truckload of Smart Chicken on Jan. 11. They were assisted by an unemployed single mom and a senior who has been out of work for months, both of whom wanted to give back for the help they receive from local pantries.
The donation will provide 28,000 servings of protein for needy families in Nebraska and Iowa. The recipients of the donation are two Omaha-area food pantries, Together Inc. and Heartland Hope Mission.
No Frills Supermarkets and Bag ‘N Save employ 1,900 people in 30 stores in Nebraska and Iowa.
