NLRB Halts Union Election in Maryland Wal-Mart
LOS ANGELES -- A regional director of the National Labor Relations Board has stopped a union election by a group of workers in a Clinton, Md. Wal-Mart, Reuters reports.
The director ruled that the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 400 could not proceed with a union election by a group of about 50 workers related to merchandise receiving functions, because it wasn't an appropriate separate bargaining unit within the store, which employs roughly 400 workers.
UFCW Local 400 filed the union election petition in July, seeking to represent only the small group of selected associates.
In other Wal-Mart news, the company's same-store sales are tracking near the high end of its estimate of 3 percent to 5 percent growth for the five weeks ending Oct. 3, according to details released yesterday in its weekly sales update. Wal-Mart said sales for the second week of September were led by girls', infants', and toddlers' apparel; toys; pharmacy; and food, with the East Coast as its strongest region.
Wal-Mart said traffic and average ticket were positive last week, with traffic making up slightly more of the comparable-store increase. Earlier in September, Wal-Mart reported its largest monthly same-store sales gain in more than a year, as clearance sales and the latest federal tax cut pushed consumers to spend more in August.
