New Online Grocery Service Expands in New York City

NEW YORK - Freshdirect.com, a New York-based fresh-food manufacturing and delivery service launched last July, has announced that it surpassed the 1,000 orders-a-day milestone on Dec. 6, and now attracts some 2,000 new customers every week.

Three years in the planning, FreshDirect operates from a 300,000-square-foot custom-built facility in Long Island City, N.Y. Comprising 12 temperature-controlled zones designed to optimize freshness of meat, poultry, fish, produce, cheese, custom-roasted and blended coffee, baked goods and grocery items, FreshDirect aims to provide prices below other food store and supermarket prices with the convenience of home or office delivery.

The company is being led by retail veteran Joe Fedele, who co-founded Fairway Uptown, a New York gourmet market.

On Tuesday, the FreshDirect delivery area expanded to more of Manhattan's Upper East Side; and on Dec. 23, the service will become available west of Third Avenue, stretching its East Side service area from 20th Street to 96th Street east of Fifth Avenue.

Previously established service areas include Battery Park City, TriBeCa, Murray Hill, Flatiron, Gramercy, Roosevelt Island, and various large employers in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. FreshDirect said it will continue to expand its delivery area citywide over the next several months.
