NEW Names Acme Markets' Judy Spires 'Outstanding Champion' Recipient

CHICAGO -- Judy Spires, c.e.o. of Supervalu's Acme Markets subsidiary, has been chosen as the 2007 Outstanding Champion by the Network of Executive Women based here.

NEW said yesterday it singled out Spires for her work on the trade organization's expansion in the Greater Philadelphia area.

"I can't think of a more deserving person for this award," said Joan Toth, NEW executive director. "Judy is an accomplished role model for women in our industry and a strong advocate for diversity," said Toth, noting that Spires' efforts were essential to getting the group launched in Philadelphia.

Spires will be formally recognized with the award at NEW's Annual Champion Reception during the FMI Show. The invitation-only reception, sponsored by Deloitte & Touche, will be held Sunday, May 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Chicago. The reception will also include presentations of the Network's 2007 industry scholarship awards and results of an industry diversity survey conducted by Deloitte.

Prior to becoming president of Acme Markets, Spires -- a 30-year supermarket veteran -- served in a variety of positions at American Stores and Albertsons, including president of Albertsons Dallas/Fort Worth Division and president of its Rocky Mountain Division. At Acme, Spires held the positions of v.p./sales and advertising, v.p./administration, v.p./human resources, v.p./operations, v.p./integration, and s.v.p./marketing and merchandising.

Malvern, Pa.-based Acme Markets, Inc. operates combination stores and supermarkets at a total of 129 locations in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
