NCR, GTECH Develop Self-Checkout Lottery POS System

ATLANTA -- NCR Corp. and GTECH are getting together to offer online lottery sales at the self-checkout. Shoppers can purchase their lottery tickets at the same NCR FastLane system that allows them to scan, bag, and pay for their own purchases.

The two companies will debut the NCR FastLane self-checkout with GTECH's Lottery Inside technology at the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) Show Oct. 11-14 in Chicago.

"Integrated lottery functionality at the retail point of sale is what retailers are demanding and lottery players have come to expect. NCR and GTECH are working together to make that happen," said GTECH s.v.p. and chief technology officer Larry Smith. "Self-checkout lanes equipped with GTECH's unique technology will provide a convenient option for lottery-playing consumers," he added.

The companies said the feature could be installed on any of NCR's self-checkout configurations. "The sale of lottery tickets is a natural extension of the functionality that NCR FastLane provides," according to NCR's v.p. of FastLane, Mike Webster.

Shoppers can now buy lottery tickets along with their milk and bread, using the same intuitive NCR FastLane self-service interface, said Webster, noting that the added convenience of eliminating the need to wait in line for a cashier can lead to increased lottery sales and store traffic.

According to a study conducted for NCR by premier global market intelligence and advisory firm IDC, more than 40 percent of U.S. consumers said they would be more likely to shop in a store that offered self-checkout than one that did not.
