NCBA Calls for Retail Beef Backer Entries

Supermarket retailers of all sizes and formats are encouraged to enter the beef checkoff-funded third annual Retail Beef Backer Awards contest through Oct. 30, 2009. The contest will once again salute excellence in marketing and merchandising of beef at the meat case.

A total of four winners will be awarded in the following categories:

--Independent Retailer: Fewer than 11 retail stores
--Mid-Size Chain Retailer: 11-99 retail stores
--Large Chain Retailer: 100 or more retail stores
--Innovator of the Year: The winner of this category can be a chain or independent retailer. This special honoree will be chosen at the judges’ discretion based on all selection criteria, with special consideration given to those who demonstrate innovative marketing, promotion and merchandising of beef.

A third-party judging panel will review retailers’ applications that illustrate their efforts in the three following areas:

--Promotions: Inclusive of shorter-lived merchandising efforts (i.e., summer grilling, holiday). Applicants are encouraged to highlight any participation in beef checkoff-funded promotions
--Programs: Inclusive of the adoption or maintenance of longer-lived initiatives (i.e., new product launches; adoption of a new program such as nutrition labeling, Easy Fresh Cooking, Hispanic, employee training, etc.). Applicants are encouraged to include any beef checkoff programs used in their operations
--Activities: Inclusive of marketing, public relations or industry events, participation in beef checkoff-funded pilot tests, surveys or any other activity that adds value to a retailer’s beef program

Anyone (excluding employees of the Centennial, Colo.-based National Cattlemen’s Beef Association) can nominate a participating retailer to win an award.
