NACDS Training Program Satisfies New CMS Requirements
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Supermarket pharmacies already using the fraud, waste, and abuse training program offered by National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation and LearnSomething, Inc. can also use the program to satisfy training requirements in the new Medicare Part D regulation.
“The NACDS Foundation/LearnSomething program is an established training platform on the prevention of fraud, waste, and abuse,” said Don Bell, s.v.p. of legal affairs and general counsel. “This is an opportunity for plans and pharmacies to adopt a training program designed to meet federal requirements and maximize efficiency.”
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rule requires Part D Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) and Medicare Advantage (MA) plans to ensure that “downstream entities” (including pharmacies and pharmacists) receive annual specialized training on fraud, waste, and abuse.
The new requirements from CMS will go into effect on January 1, 2009, giving pharmacies eleven months to train their personnel.
The NACDS Foundation joined with online training provider LearnSomething just over a year ago to launch a voluntary FWA training program for pharmacies to meet CMS' requirements and address the needs of participating plans and providers.
The online training program was created to help educate and train pharmacy employees on federal laws and guidelines related to fraud, waste, and abuse. The program helps employees prevent FWA in government health care programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Designed to be flexible enough to meet the specific training needs of individual companies, the program can be customized to include each company's policies and procedures.
The specialized FWA training is accredited for one hour of continuing pharmacy education credit.
