Mrs. Smith's Bakeries Acquires Gordon's Pies Brand

SUWANEE, Ga. - Mrs. Smith's Bakeries, the country's leading frozen dessert company and a business unit of Flowers Foods, has acquired the Gordon's Pies brand of baked fruit pies from Gordon Weinberger, president and founder of the Londonderry, N.H.-based company. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The acquisition gives Mrs. Smith's Bakeries another strong brand for its portfolio of in-store bakery products. "We are very excited about the addition of Gordon's to our brand line-up," said Bill Strenglis, Mrs. Smith's Bakeries' president and chief operating officer. "Gordon Weinberger has done a wonderful job in creating excitement behind this brand and we see a great opportunity in growing this brand nationally."

Weinberger founded Gordon's Pies in 1993 and pushed the company into national distribution, contracting production of the pies to outside bakers. Mrs. Smith's Bakeries began producing pies for Gordon's in 2001. With this acquisition, Mrs. Smith's has been the exclusive producer of Gordon's Pies and will now expand the brand nationally.

Weinberger will continue to promote Gordon's Pies for Mrs. Smith's. He is currently traveling across the country from store to store to meet consumers and encourage them to sample his pies. Roaming the bakery areas of local grocery stores, he chants "OOOO-La-La, Eat Mo' Pies!" He encourages consumers to participate in his famous "Pie Walk," a game similar to musical chairs.

Mrs. Smith's Bakeries, headquartered in Suwanee, Ga., markets bakery desserts, cakes, specialty breads, and pastries to retail, foodservice, and vending customers throughout the United States. Top brands include Mrs. Smith's, Mrs. Freshley's, Pet-Ritz, European Bakers, Oronoque Orchards, Stilwell, and Pour-A-Quiche.
