More Subway Franchises Open at Food Retailers

MILFORD, Conn. -- During the four-month period of August through November 2006, Subway here opened 766 new restaurants in 45 countries worldwide, including 425 locations in 46 U.S. states and eight Canadian provinces. Of the new franchises, 69 opened inside convenience stores and another 69 opened inside Wal-Mart stores from coast to coast.

A single outlet opened in a conventional grocery store, Wagner IGA in Minster, Ohio.

The company also opened seven shops in BJ's Wholesale Clubs in Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia

Top regions for development during the period were the United Kingdom, with 88 new Subway restaurants; Germany, with 48 new locations; and Australia, with 42. Stateside, the chain added 47 restaurants in California, 33 in Ohio, and 26 in New York.

With more than 26,800 locations in 86 countries, Subway restaurant is the world's largest submarine sandwich franchise. The chain has more open and operating locations in North America than any other.
