Metz Fresh Recalls Bagged Fresh Spinach
KING CITY, Calif. -- Metz Fresh here, in conjunction with the FDA, said it is recalling bagged spinach because of a positive finding of salmonella in product detected during a routine company test.
The spinach is distributed under the Metz Fresh label in both retail and foodservice packages, including 10- and 16-oz. bags as well as 4-2.5 lb. and 4-lb. cartons.
The only Metz Fresh product affected is spinach that bears the tracking codes 12208114, 12208214 and 12208314, the company said.
The recalled spinach covers 8,118 cases of product, although the company said more than 90 percent of that was on hold and would not be released.
The test was only positive for one sample of many on three packing lines, but the company said it decided to recall all the spinach that was packaged that day from that field lot as a precautionary measure.
Metz Fresh said it received no reports of illnesses.
The recall comes nearly a year after a major E. coli outbreak in fresh spinach that was blamed for the deaths of three people, and illnesses of another 200.
