Metro Canada Warehouse Employees Return to Work
MONTREAL -- It was business as usual Sunday at Metro's dry-grocery warehouse here, after the retailer reached a long-term agreement last week with 315 employees who went on strike Nov. 24, according to published reports.
The warehouse workers went back to work two days following the Dec. 8 ratification of the settlement. The new collective agreement will be effective for nine years, thus "ensuring labor peace until 2015 under terms that will allow the company to remain competitive in the industry," according to a statement from Metro.
The workers' last contract expired in September. A mediator helped both sides work out their differences over outsourcing and the company's rising use of part-time employees.
Metro operates a network of nearly 600 food stores in Quebec and Ontario under the Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, A&P, Dominion, Loeb, and Food Basics banners, as well as over 250 pharmacies under the Brunet, Clini Plus, The Pharmacy, and Drug Basics names.
