Mel Coleman, Jr. Joins American Farmland Trust Board

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Mel Coleman, Jr., chairman of Coleman Natural Foods here, has joined the American Farmland Trust's board of director, for which he will serve a three-year term.

Coleman, a fifth-generation Colorado rancher, was raised in Saguache, Colo., where his father, Mel Coleman, Sr., started Coleman Natural Meats in 1979. He joined his father at the company in 1984, where he concentrated on sales, marketing and new account development. His responsibilities expanded to include a petitioning effort urging the USDA to restore labeling standards to natural beef to the original 1980 definition, and effort that continues today.

Coleman has nurtured long-lasting relationships domestically through extensive involvement in the natural and organic foods industry. He has served on the boards of the Organic Trade Association and the Organic Food Alliance, and currently serves on the Union for Concerned Scientists board of advisors, American Forests' board of directors, the American Meat Institute board of directors and the Colorado Climate Action Panel.

American Farmland Trust works with communities and individuals to protect the best land, plan for agriculture and keep the land healthy.
