Meijer's New Prez Spends First Week at Stores
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Mark Murray, the new president of Meijer Inc. based here, spent much of this week traveling the Midwest, visiting store managers and looking at the competition.
"I want my first days with Meijer to be out where the work really gets done," Murray told The Grand Rapids Press. Murray said his visits will center on "looking at our stores and touring the competition, and seeing things through our store directors' eyes."
The former president of Grand Valley State University, who began his new duties on Monday, told the paper he is enthusiastic about beginning the new phase of his professional life in assuming the helm of the family-owned retailer. During his field visits, Murray was joined by other members of the company's administrative team, including Doug Meijer, co-chairman, and Paul Boyer, vice chairman and co-c.e.o., a position he shares with Hank Meijer.
Having served on Meijer's executive board since 2004, the 52-year-old Murray was named Meijer's president in January. He succeeds Larry Zigerelli, who in December left the company for personal reasons after seven months.
Prior to joining GVSU in 2001, Murray served as treasurer of the State of Michigan, as well as the state's director of management and budget. He also served as v.p./finance and administration at Michigan State University.
Meijer operates 175 stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
