Meijer to Host Red Hat Society Teas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Meijer here will celebrate its first-ever Red Hat Society Open House Tea event today, in all of its 171 stores throughout the Midwest. The event is tied to the popular book, "The Red Hat Society; Fun and Friendship After Fifty," which has developed quite a following and spawned similar events elsewhere.

The festivities at the Red Hat Open House Teas in Meijer stores will include drawings for prizes, food, trunk shows, special demonstrations, and more.

"We've had calls from Red Hatters who are planning to come with entire groups to these events," Cathy Cooper, director of marketing for Meijer, said yesterday. "We knew this would be a great success, but it's building into something bigger now. We're not sure what to expect."

The Society was spawned after the book's author, Sue Ellen Cooper, began the red hat movement in California during the late 1990s.

Meijer is a family owned and operated grocery and general merchandise retailer operating stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
