McDonald's Hires Nutritionist, Plans Healthier Menus

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- McDonald's Corp. yesterday named Cathy Kapica, Ph.D., R.D., as director, Worldwide Nutrition. Kapica will work closely with a cross-functional team to help guide McDonald's nutrition and active lifestyles initiatives.

"Helping encourage our customers to eat smart and be active is an ongoing commitment that McDonald's continues to make to our customers around the world," said Ken Barun, corporate v.p., McDonald's Corp., to whom Kapica will report.

Prior to joining McDonald's, Kapica served as senior scientist and director of nutrition education at the Quaker Oats Co. "McDonald's reaches millions of people every day, and that provides a great opportunity to promote smart eating and active lifestyles, as well as to make a meaningful contribution in many areas of this business," she commented.

In a related development, McDonald's restaurants in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut said yesterday that they plan to launch menus for people following low-fat, low-calorie, and low-carbohydrate diets. Nutritionist and author Pamela Smith is working with the fast-food chain to create the Real Life Choices program, which will start in January.

Later this fall, McDonald's will introduce reformulated Chicken McNuggets that are made with white meat only and will be lower in fat and calories than the current version.
