Martin’s Pharmacist Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Dennis Stanley, a Martin’s Food Markets pharmacist, received the 2012 APhA Immunization Champion Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington-based American Pharmacists Association (APhA) at its recent annual meeting in New Orleans. Stanley is currently a pharmacist at a Martin's store in Richmond, Va.

“Through immunization work with Ukrop’s and now Martin’s, Dennis has become a recognized expert in travel vaccinations both locally and nationally, training hundreds of pharmacists to implement their own immunization practices,” said Martin’s regional VP Jim Scanlon. In 2010, Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant/Martin's, a divsion of Ahold USA, acquired Ukrop's.

Stanley (left) began his pharmacy career with the former Ukrop’s Pharmacy in 1974 and in 1998 received training to administer immunizations. In 2000, he began the pre-travel clinic at Ukrop’s Pharmacy at the request of a local church group in need of travel vaccines for members going to Africa. By 2005, Stanley’s travel clinic was seeing more than 1,000 patients annually for consultations and had administered more than 2,000 vaccinations. In 2007, Stanley received a Certificate in Travel Health through theInternational Society of Travel Medicine and has become a recognized expert in this area of immunizations. He is currently national faculty for the APhA Pharmacy Based Immunization certificate training program.

Giant/Martin’s operates stores under the names of Giant Food Stores and Martin’s Food Markets in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, employing nearly 30,000 associates.
