Marsh Sells Its Central Kitchen

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marsh Supermarkets here has sold its central kitchen facility, Butterfield Foods, LLC, and plans to use reinvest the proceeds of the sale into its stores.

The terms of the sale were not disclosed. The buyer is Violi Foods, LLC, whose president and c.e.o., Frank Violi, has also been president at Butterfield since mid-2003.

As part of the deal, Butterfield will continue to supply Marsh with some products and will remain at its current location in Noblesville, Ind., the grocer said.

“Similar to our recent sale of our McNamara Floral divisions, the sale of Butterfield Foods to Violi Foods is consistent with our desire to remain focused on our core business of running supermarkets,” said Frank Lazaran, Marsh’s chairman, c.e.o. and president. “Frank Violi has done a tremendous job with Butterfield and we’re pleased that we could finalize a sale with him and his partners.”

Florida-based Sun Capital Partners acquired Marsh in September 2006. In May, Sun announced a plan for "deconsolidation" of the Marsh and Village Pantry units.

Currently, Marsh operates 79 Marsh Supermarkets, 19 LoBill Foods and 6 O’Malia’s Food Markets in Indiana and Ohio, as well as Crystal Food Services, Primo Banquet Catering and Conference Centers, and several other food-related companies.
