Marsh Adds Liquor Departments, Subtracts Video

INDIANOPOLIS - In the latest in a series of refinements at Marsh Supermarkets based here, the chain is now adding liquor sections, and eliminating video departments in favor of DVD vending machines.

Marsh spokesman Connie Gardner was quoted in local press reports as saying the changes are prompting either positive responses, or are largely going unnoticed by customers.

Gardner told the Muncie Star Press that the process of obtaining liquor permits for stores is "ongoing. We've had no feedback from customers."

Gardner said the company has eliminated full-service video departments, and installed Redbox DVD vending machines in 33 locations. That change has generated "very positive feedback. Customers like that you can walk up and get one and walk away," she said.

In recent weeks, Marsh separated its Village Pantry division -- which operates 148 stores -- into another business unit, prompting several observers to speculate that the company might sell off the c-store unit.

The financially-strapped chain put itself on the block in early 2006, and was ultimately acquired by Florida-based Sun Capital Partners. The new ownership has since closed a few Marsh and Village Pantry c-stores, and has made other strategic changes in recent months.
