Market Street Spices Up Kids’ Summer with Culinary Day Camps

With more families eating in these days, Lubbock, Texas-based United Supermarkets’ upscale Market Street is doing its part to grow the next generation of home cooks over the summer with a variety of new classes and summer camps at its Colleyville and McKinney, Texas, stores.

“At Market Street, we love to celebrate the summer months, and expanding our youth culinary program is the perfect outlet for us to share what we enjoy most with our youngest guests — food,” noted Market Street executive chef Chris Wilson. “We offer culinary classes for kids and teens throughout the entire year, but school schedules, studies and extracurricular activities limit the amount of lessons we can hold.”

Beginning this month, young chefs can learn the art of breakfast, international cuisines, how spices alter the flavor of a dish, cake decorating, food science and many other handy-dandy culinary techniques.

Among the classes offered for three separate age groups — 4 to 6, 7 to 11, and 12 to 17 —there’s something for every kind of kid, ranging from Dining In With Mexican and Italian Food, Teen-Tastic Cuisine, and Creative Cakes by Kids, to “Fowl” Mood, Father's Day Treats, and Easy Peasy Pasta.

“Now that there are several months of free time, our culinary staff is more than thrilled to serve as part of an alternative outlet for summer activities that are both fun and educational,” added Wilson.

Market Street culinary schools are located inside the Colleyville and McKinney Market Street stores. A complete list of summer culinary classes for children and teens is available at www.marketstreetunited.com/culinaryschedule.asp.

The company recently became the first grocer in Texas to implement the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System, which provides comprehensive nutritional information in one simple number between one and 100.
