Mariano’s Opens Third Chicago-area Market

Mariano’s Fresh Market has opened its first store within the city of Chicago and its third in the city’s metropolitan area since its first location opened in the suburbs about a year ago.

The Mariano’s at 3350 N. Western Ave. is the latest of 20 supermarkets the Milwaukee-based retailer plans to open in the Chicago area over the next five years. A second Chicago store, at 333 E. Benton Place in Lakeshore East, is slated to open later this year, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Mariano’s is the namesake of Roundy’s chairman and CEO Bob Mariano, former head of the Chicago-area Dominick’s supermarket chain. Roundy’s operates more than 150 stores under the Mariano’s, Copps, Rainbow, Metro Market and Pick ‘n Save banners in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.

The Mariano’s in Arlington Heights, Ill., was Progressive Grocer’s Store of the Month in November 2010. Read more about it here.
