Major Elevated to PG Editor in Chief; Canning Aboard as Senior Editor
Stagnito Media’s Progressive Grocer has promoted Meg Major from Executive Editor to Editor-in-Chief and hired Kathie Canning as the publication’s Senior Editor. Canning will also be editorial director of Progressive Grocer’s Store Brands, a new print and online supplement to the brand, launching in July.
“Meg Major brings a tremendous skill set to the position,” said Steven Lichtenstein, VP and group publisher of PG. “She brings market knowledge, industry awareness, respect by her fellow team members and industry peers, journalism savvy, and most important, a fundamentally sound understanding of all aspects of Progressive Grocer — print and digital.
“Canning brings an industry presence, a market knowledge and journalism acumen that will help her greatly in her new roles,” added Lichtenstein. “Working hand-in-hand with the Progressive Grocer editorial and sales teams, Major and Canning will be my partners as we drive Progressive Grocer to the No. 1 position among all retail trade publications.”
Major has been a member of the PG editorial team since 1999 and is a pioneer of the publication’s sister online brand, Progressivegrocer.com. As PG’s longtime Fresh Food Editor, she has extensive knowledge of the produce/floral, meat/seafood, deli, bakery and prepared foods categories, among others. She has also served as the Midwest beat reporter for PG’s online daily news e-newsletter, as well as spearheading a number of special events and projects, including roundtables, webcasts, and other multimedia ventures.
Prior to PG, Major held dual duties as manager of public and trade relations and assistant editor at the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association, and was also editor-in-chief of Food Trade News, a Philadelphia-based regional supermarket trade publication.
Canning is an award-winning writer with more than 20 years of experience. For the past 13 years, she has held editorial positions with a number of trade publications, covering industries ranging from chemical processing to food and beverage retailing. She was executive editor of Refrigerated and Frozen Foods, the magazine that helped launch Stagnito Communications, years ago. Most recently, Canning was editor-in-chief of Private Label Buyer magazine, a monthly BNP Media publication dedicated to helping food, drug store and mass merchandise retailers optimize their private label programs.
Progressive Grocer is owned by Stagnito Media, a Cardinal Growth, LP portfolio company, headquartered in Deerfield, Ill. Cardinal Growth, LP is a Chicago-based Small Business Investment Company.
