Macey’s Grocery Stores Founder Dies
Waldo “Walt” Lincoln Macey, the founder of Macey’s grocery stores, died earlier this week in Salt Lake City of natural causes. He was 90 years old. A past president of the Salt Lake Grocers Association (SLGA) and Utah Retail Grocers Association (URGA), Macey started Save A Nickel Market in Rose Park in 1947, and that small store grew into a chain throughout the intermountain region.
In addition to his leadership of SLGA and URGA, Macey was chairman of the boards of both the National Grocers Association and the National Association of Retail Grocers of the United States. He was also the recipient of the National Food Industry’s Spirit of America Award and the City of Hope Humanitarian Award.
He served in U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, for which he served as bishop of the Monument Park 16th Ward.
