Lunds/Byerly's Enters Online Grocery Derby
EDINA, Minn. -- Lund Food Holdings Inc. here is introducing online shopping and delivery, branded under its Byerly's and Lunds banners today.
The online service - available at www.lundsandbyerlys.com -- will give shoppers access to nearly 15,000 products, ranging from gourmet and organic cuisine to fresh produce and frozen food. Customers will choose whether to pick up their orders from a selected Byerly's supermarket, or have the groceries delivered to their homes or businesses.

As one the first major Twin Cities supermarkets to offer online shopping with home delivery service, Lunds and Byerly's will face off against the established, locally-based Simon Delivers.com, which six years ago became the region's first online grocer.
Cost for delivery is a flat $9.95, while the store pickup fee is $4.95. The prices of grocery products online are the same as those at the company's 20 Twin Cities-area Byerly's and Lunds stores. The company will require customers be available to accept their deliveries, in order to safeguard freshness and maintain a high level of service.
Representatives for Lund Food Holdings did not return phone calls seeking additional information at press time.
Local reports said the service has been in the works for several months, including the use of unmarked delivery trucks to test the concept with employees. Now rolled out to the public, the service will utilize a contingent of delivery drivers and personal shopping assistants to assemble orders.
Brown said SimonDelivers continues to upgrade its service and offerings, noting his company expects to be able to offer same-day delivery service within the next three to four months. SimonDelivers makes both attended and unattended home deliveries.
