Local College Students Compete to Create Heinen's Heart-healthy Tote Bag Design

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -- In tandem with its commitment to promoting awareness of both heart-healthy and earth-friendly lifestyle choices, Heinen's Fine Foods here has enlisted students from a local college fashion department to develop the grocer's latest eco-friendly canvas grocery tote bags.

The bags are being sold in all of the metro Cleveland-based family-owned grocer's stores during the month of February as part of the American Heart Association's National Heart month.

Heinen's co-owner Jeff Heinen, who is also a member of Ursuline College's board of trustees, said the grocer contacted Dr. Connie Korosec, chair of the Ursuline fashion program, "to see if students enrolled in the design program would be interested in creating a graphic design for a new, earth-friendly Heinen's tote bag for our celebration of National Heart Month."

Heinen said the response was enthusiastic, with over 25 freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior students submitting drawings for the new Heinen's tote bag. Sophomore Kristen Mascha's "Women Have the Greatest Hearts" bag, which is surrounded by a colorful array of hot-pink and chocolate-brown hearts, was selected as the contest winner.

The trendy new totes, made of cotton canvas, are not only fashionable, but also strong and hold more than a standard plastic bag. Their style and versatility will easily find uses beyond the grocery store.

"Designing an eco-friendly bag that centered on women's health and healthy eating was an opportunity that our students jumped on, because it is a subject they are very interested in," said Dr. Korosec. "What a great opportunity for our students to participate in a real exercise in design and show their talent to the Cleveland community."

Available for $4.95, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this tote bag will support the Women's Cardiovascular Center at Cleveland Clinic.
