Loblaws to Open 4th Bagless Location

BRAMPTON, Ont. -- The Atlantic Superstore in Halifax, N.S. reopening today will not only be the first major grocery store in Nova Scotia to dispense with plastic grocery bags at checkout, but is also the fourth Loblaw Cos., Ltd. banner store to go bagless, according to the company.

The other bagless stores are in Milton, Ont.; Langford, B.C.; and Sherbrooke, Que.

Shoppers at the Quinpool Road store will be encouraged to use such alternatives from Loblaw as the PC Green Canada's Greenest Shopping Bag, which is reusable, and the PC Green Box, which fits within a store shopping cart and can hold up to the equivalent of three to five standard grocery bags.

Among those present at the reopening ceremony this morning will be Halifax mayor Peter J. Kelly, bob Kenney of the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour, and youth members from Halifax Regional Municipality's Adventure Earth Centre "H.E.A.T." (Helping the Earth by Acting Together) program, who will provide assistance to customers.

Loblaw is Canada's largest food distributor and a leading provider of general merchandise, drugstore, and financial products and services. The company is one of the largest private-sector employers in Canada, employing over 139,000 full-time and part-time employees.
